As fall begins, many homeowners start to retreat indoors without a thought about planting.  However, fall planting can be very rewarding, especially for perennials, bulbs, trees and shrubs.  Mums are the signature flowers of the season and bulbs provide a good investment and offer years of spring color in your yard.  Most bulbs can be planted until the ground in frozen.  It is also a popular time of the year to lay the landscaping ground work for a beautiful spring design scheme.

Every project should begin with a notification to JULIE at least two working days prior to digging in Illinois.  JULIE’s Homeowner Brochure includes information about the one-call process and an explanation of the different color paint and flags that each utility locator uses to mark their buried lines.  As a not-for-profit organization, JULIE neither owns nor marks any underground facilities.

Planting typically must be completed by the end of October to avoid winterkill, where seedlings and plants die from exposure.  Keep this in mind as you create your plans this fall.
